Choral Scholarships & Exhibitions

There can be up to eight choral scholars and exhibitioners in the choir at any time. There is no quota for any one part and no restriction on subjects studied. Scholars (Lincoln College students) and exhibitioners (students from across the University) receive an annual award of £100 and are offered free individual singing lessons. It is envisaged that they will take a central role in the life of the choir and that they will also be active in the wider musical life of the College. There is no separate application process; scholars and exhibitioners are selected by audition and interview from amongst the members of the choir. Please get in touch with the Chaplain or the other organ scholars if you would like to know more.

Harriet Taylor ~ Soprano Choral Scholar

Picture
Harriet is a third year medic who became a member of the chapel choir in her first term. At home, she was involved in several productions with the Cambridge Youth Opera (including The Magic Flute and Amahl and the Night Visitors) and sung with Great St. Mary's choir for many years. In Oxford, as well as singing the Lincoln chapel choir, she also sings with the Magdalen Consort of Voices and plays violin in the Oxford University Orchestra.

Emily Nethsingha ~ Soprano Choral Exhibitioner

Picture
Emily is a third year PPE student at University College. Having joined the Lincoln choir at the end of her first year, she has really enjoyed performing repertoire such as the Byrd 5 part mass and touring with the choir to the USA. She is also a member of the University Dance Team and has performed in several shows in her time at Oxford. Before coming to Oxford she sang in the choir of Great St Mary’s in Cambridge and played the piano and cello.

Anna Gunstone ~ Soprano Choral Scholar

Picture
Anna is a second-year music student who joined the choir in 2018. Before Oxford, Anna played cello and percussion in the London Schools Symphony Orchestra and at the Centre for Young Musicians, where she was given the opportunity to sing as a member of the children's chorus in Carmen (2012) with the English National Opera, as well as on the Nightwish Album Imaginareum (2011). Outside of term time, Anna sings at St Alfege Church in Greenwich and plays in ensembles such as the Wyatt Sinfonia. During term she plays cello in the Oxford University Orchestra, Oxford University Chamber Ensemble, and various student projects. Anna enjoys singing a wide range of music but particularly enjoys Renaissance and Baroque choral music.

Roseanna Allwood ~ Alto Choral Scholar

Picture
Rosie is a second year medic who sang in churches, youth choirs and school from a young age. Since arriving at Lincoln she has greatly enjoyed singing in the theatrical scene (Into the Woods and Iolanthe), and then producing the 2019 Lincoln Musical - My Fair Lady. Rosie also plays in the Concordia recorder quartet.

Alex Jenkins ~ Tenor Choral Exhibitioner

Picture
Alex Jenkins is a third year music student at Magdalen College. He began singing as a chorister at St Albans Cathedral aged 8, where he continued to sing as part of the Abbey Singers in addition to various school ensembles before coming to Oxford. For the last two years, he has been a choral exhibitioner in the Choir of Lincoln College and began singing as a tenor lay clerk in the 8-voice choir of Pusey House Chapel, Oxford in September. Aside from singing, Alex is also an active recorder and bodhrán (Irish frame drum) player, focussing on music of the late Baroque and folk repertory form across Northern Europe. He has made recent orchestral appearances with OUChorus for Purcell’s Come Ye Sons of Art and the Oxford Bach Ensemble for Bach’s Cantata 65 and Easter Oratorio, and is a member of the University’s Ceilidh Band, which has recently toured both Brittany and Northumbria. Since January 2019, he has been artistic director of the student recorder quartet Concordia, which plays a range of consort repertoire from the Renaissance right up to contemporary commissions.

Carl Olavesen ~ Bass Choral Scholar

Picture
Carl started choral singing at the age of 7, just before he joined New College choir as a treble. Since then he has never quite been able to give it up, even as he gained a bass voice at Abingdon School. After taking a gap year abroad, helping to run a choir, he came to study Chemistry at Lincoln college in 2018. Almost on the first day, he joined the chapel choir and has never looked back!

William Moore ~ Bass Choral Scholar

Picture
William is a third year student studying Chemistry at Lincoln. On top of singing in the choir, he enjoys playing the violin and is part of various university orchestras and ensembles as a result. Before coming to Oxford, he sang for his school choir and was a member of the National Youth Music Theatre Company."
